Accordion Book

This accordion book was made for an exhibition of kids’ photographs and videos that were collected as part of my longitudinal research with diverse, urban youth growing up in immigrant communities in Worcester, Ma. The exhibition included photographs taken by the youth at ages 10, 12, 16, and 18. It also included collages I assembled and videotaped as a means to “see” the images of “moms-in-kitchens” and “teachers-in-classrooms” as they were set in motion and over laid with the kids’ descriptions of their reasons for taking the photographs. I called this process and photo analysis and re-representation “collaborative seeing.” Each photo has a “backstory” to it and viewers are invited to follow Howard Beekers’ way of engaging the images that is included in the accordion book.
