Vietnamese New Year Scroll 2015

Donated: February 2, 2019

As a tradition, Vietnamese teenagers in Hanoi would go to the literary temple (Văn Miếu) to ask for blessing. In 2015, I visited the temple and asked for the word “Happiness.” The characters are supposed to be written in Sino-Vietnamese. Yet the one you see here is simplified Mandarin Chinese instead [because] possibly the calligrapher and the audience both don’t understand or read Sino-Vietnamese.
